About Claire

Claire Newland is a film photographer/artist living on Awabakal land in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area.

I capture mother nature and the art of mothering.

My own journey of caring for children and families, alongside my photography practice has led me to this space.

I see the beauty in the rawness of parenting and I see the importance of placing the family on the stage, in a society that doesn’t always value the chaos in all it’s glory.

It’s a privilege to be let inside,

To capture the tangle of bodies on the couch as everyone clambers for a Mother’s love,

The milk stained singlet of the first few weeks postpartum,

The rounded full moon of a belly at 40 weeks and counting.

I’m here for it all, however you want to be.

This is a co collaboration, a dance, a connection.

My photography practice began through my love of the natural world.

Through long periods of observation and slow movement traversing the landscapes around me, I began to capture what I saw.

This practice is still a part of my life, though I see the beauty in humans with fresh eyes, the embodiment of the natural world, not separate from it, and so my lens expands.

I still travel far and wide, whenever life allows to places which feed my soul, to make pictures and revel in the peace that comes with that.
